In 1983, AeroVironment obtained funding from an unspecified US government agency to secretly investigate a UAV concept designated "High Altitude Solar" or HALSOL. As part of the ERAST program, AeroVironment built four generations of long endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under the leadership of Ray Morgan, the first of which was the Pathfinder. They were developed further into the NASA Centurion and NASA Helios aircraft.ĪeroVironment initiated its development of full-scale solar-powered aircraft with the Gossamer Penguin and Solar Challenger vehicles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, following the pioneering work of Robert Boucher, who built the first solar-powered flying models in 1974. They were built to develop the technologies that would allow long-term, high-altitude aircraft to serve as atmospheric satellites, to perform atmospheric research tasks as well as serve as communications platforms. ![]() developed the vehicles under NASA's Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology (ERAST) program. Sun charts illustrating the variation in the sun’s movement in relation to latitude. The NASA Pathfinder and NASA Pathfinder Plus were the first two aircraft developed as part of an evolutionary series of solar- and fuel-cell-system-powered unmanned aerial vehicles. ![]() This gives the position of the sun, fully defined as an azimuth and altitude. In this case the intersection point sits exactly on the 30° line. Interpolate between the concentric circle lines to find the altitude.Trace a concentric circle around from the intersection point to the vertical north axis, on which is displayed the altitude angles.Read the azimuth as an angle taken clockwise from north.Draw a line from the very center of the diagram, through the intersection point, out to the perimeter of the diagram.Remember to intersect solid with solid and dotted with dotted lines. Find the intersection point of the hour and date lines.Locate the required date line, remembering that solid are used for Jan-June and dotted lines for July-Dec.Locate the required hour line on the diagram.the azimuth is 62o the altitude is 30oĪnnotated stereographic sun path diagram. The intersection points between date and hour lines give the position of the sun. Hour Lines/ Analemma - Hour lines are shown as figure-eight-type lines that intersect the date lines and represent the position of the sun at a specific hour of the day.Date Lines - Date lines start on the eastern side of the graph and run to the western side and represent the path of the sun on one particular day of the year.Altitude Lines - Altitude angles are represented as concentric circular dotted lines that run from the center of the diagram out. ![]()
